Trendsetter, engaging and versatile; self-proclaimed ‘studio guy’ and labelled as the next ‘Rahman’, Amit Trivedi has come a long way from just the guy who was given his first break by Anurag Kashyap.
His beginnings were humble. His mom and sister used to sing, so he would often jam with them as a kid and his interest grew in music. Later, he jammed for his fusion band ‘OM‘. They managed to do a few gigs but that wasn’t enough. He trailed his passion and started writing jingles and composing background score for Hindi, English and Gujarati theatre. With no formal training in music except for a little jazz, he has done a remarkable work.
Trivedi got ‘Dev D’ after his friend Shilpa Rao suggested his name to Kashyap, he dished out a wide range of tunes, all the 18 songs had different elements from rock to jazz to folk. It was after listening to Amit’s music that Anurag Kashyap decided to turn ‘Dev D’ into a musical but the movie was postponed (Trivedi later won National Award for ‘Dev D’) and ‘Aamir’ became his first noted work. He composed ‘Ha Raham’ for ‘Amir’. Amit composed ‘Iktara’ for ‘Wake Up Sid‘. Then ‘Udaan’ happened, which boasted of heavy rock and Indian classical tracks like ‘Naav’ and ‘Azaadiyan’ and set the ball rolling. Ahead of it was a commercial movie like ‘Aisha’ which had a Punjabi, a Salsa and a Rock number. He continued delivering and worked on ‘No One Killed Jessica’, ‘English Vinglish’ and ‘Aiyya’. ‘Dreamum Wakeupum’ is his composition.
In 2013, ‘Kai Po Chhe’ came his way. ‘Manja’ was immensely appreciated and he went on to work for ‘Lootera’, a film set in Bengal. ‘Shikayaten’ and ‘Sawaar Loon’ established that Amit Trivedi could not disappoint. In his latest release ‘Queen’, Amit again showed his proficiency. He is the man behind a soothing ‘Kinaare’ and a funky ‘O Gujariya’. Also, lending his imperfect yet magical voice for some of his creations has managed to win accolades
His effect touches the sky when he teams up with Amitabh Bhattacharya. These partners in rhyme have known each other long before Bollywood came calling. Amitabh wanted to be a singer but Amit urged him to write lyrics for ‘Dev D’ to help him bag the project.
Amit has done an incredible job in introducing folk music in an outstanding fashion. Be it ‘Monta Re’ which is influenced by Bengali folk or ‘Navrai Majhi’, a popular Maharashtrian wedding song, Trivedi has captured the vibe associated with these tracks amazingly. Also, he has been successful in introducing new singers in the business. Nikhil Dsouza became the voice of ‘Sham’ (Aisha) after Amit heard him singing a jingle on TV.
His music has coincided with the need of the industry. Every time he has collaborated with the likes of Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwani, trippy and peppy tracks have come out. He has always maintained that he is a director’s guy. A good script and narration is all he needs. He has charmed his contemporaries and the audience is in awe of him. Vishal Shekhar tagged him as a ‘killer musician’. He is all about idiosyncrasies. He rises above all because of his sense of melody and no clutter in his sounds. At the time when Bollywood has resorted to Yo Yo Honey Singh for music, Trivedi is a luxury.
